The Keenan Project is a 12 ha ecological restoration property located along the Meduxnekeag River upstream of Jackson Falls. Formerly operated as a gravel pit, the site had been almost entirely cleared prior to its acquisition by the Meduxnekeag River Association, leaving only a narrow riparian buffer and scattered wetland forests along the river. Today, the property serves as a long-term restoration project demonstrating how historically exploited properties along the Meduxnekeag River can be restored to natural forest conditions.
In the spring of 2025, Meduxnekeag River Association staff initiated a large-scale reforestation effort through the federal 2 Billion Trees program. Hundreds of native and climate-resilient tree species were planted across the former gravel pit to establish a diverse future forest capable of adapting to changing environmental conditions. As vegetation regenerates, staff have also installed bird nesting boxes throughout the property to provide nesting opportunities in the open gravel slopes, compensating for the temporary lack of mature trees while encouraging wildlife to recolonize the site.
Although much of the property is in the early stages of restoration, mature forest remains along the river and within wetland areas. Eastern white cedar, eastern hemlock, balsam fir, and other wetland species make up these riparian forests, helping stabilize streambanks, reduce erosion, and shade the river. This forested buffer plays an important role in maintaining cool water temperatures and protecting aquatic habitat.
The section of the Meduxnekeag River flowing through the property is designated as fly-fishing only and supports high-quality habitat for brook trout, brown trout, and other coldwater fish species. Deep pools, shaded banks, and clean, well-oxygenated water make this reach an important component of the river's recreational fishery.
Located approximately two kilometres from the Canada–United States border, the Keenan Project is currently the Meduxnekeag River Association's most upstream property.
