Gravel Pit Restoration

Date Acquired: 2006
Location: Western Meduxnekeag River
Trails: None
The Gravel Pit Restoration is a 2 ha ecological restoration property located on the western slope of the Meduxnekeag River. Formerly used for gravel extraction, the site was left largely devoid of vegetation, exposing bare soils that were vulnerable to erosion and the transport of sediment into the river during periods of heavy rainfall. Following its acquisition in 2006, the Meduxnekeag River Association undertook a reforestation effort by planting native trees and shrubs throughout the disturbed areas to stabilize soils, improve wildlife habitat, and restore a forested buffer along the river. Today, the property supports a young regenerating forest that will gradually develop into a more typical Appalachian Hardwood community through natural succession.
